Pretty Green Hills (2006)

Dave Evans

If one artist captures the essence of bluegrass as it used to be, it’s Dave Evans. Steeped in tradition but highly individualistic, Evans has always gone his own way, leaving excellent and memorable music in his wake. This release is similar to many of his previous albums in that it combines some bluegrass classics (“Our Last Goodbye,” “Cora is Gone”), some powerful, mossy old songs that he does so well (“Little Willie,” “East Virginia Blues”), a couple of originals, including a wonderful “Should I Go, Should I Stay” and, in this case, two Tom T. & Dixie Hall numbers highlighted by the memorable title song, which has gone down as a latter day Evans classic.
