The Steep Canyon Rangers make their mark on the world of contemporary bluegrass by recording songs and tunes that are predominantly originals (mostly by banjo picker Graham Sharp). Their arrangements and harmonies are tight and their musicianship is excellent and imaginative, with Mike Guggino’s mandolin, Nicky Sanders’ fiddle, and Sharp’s banjo all working together flawlessly. Woody Platt’s lead vocals are solid and right on the money. This is an album of solid, power-packed traditional bluegrass, showing the results of years of extensive touring combined with raw talent and good taste. Ronnie Bowman adds harmony vocals on a few numbers, and a little work by Wyatt Rice (guitar) and Randy Kohrs (dobro) enhances this already spectacular album, the Rangers' first for Rebel.
