Dave Evans
Made up of selections from his five excellent Rebel albums, this is one of the finest and most power-packed collections of hard, traditional bluegrass that you will ever find. It’s a great program that nicely mixes his slower, emotion-charged ballads with equally powerful up tempo pieces. Evans is superb on the bluegrass standards like “Wild Bill Jones,” “Another Night” and “You Won't Be Satisfied That Way,” but on his own songs which make up the majority of the 17 cuts here, he may be even better. His “One Loaf of Bread,” “Be Proud of the Grey in Your Hair” and “Play Me a Song, Little Blind Boy” are alone worth the price of the disc. Also his distinctive treatment of Woody Guthrie’s “Pastures of Plenty” is a spine-chilling masterpiece that may be the best cut of all.
