Ralph Stanley’s band is in top form on this thematic album devoted to legendary old-timers Grayson and Whitter. The album works beautifully, as not only did G. B. Grayson live just a few miles from the Stanley homeplace, but Carter & Ralph knew his music well through the duo’s recordings. Many of the songs here had already entered the bluegrass tradition long (Dr. Stanley's previous recordings of classics like 'Train 45" and "Shout Lula" had attracted some attention) but there is plenty of well-handled material new to the Clinch Mountain Boys on this album.
