Shawn Lane
Lane, mandolinist, fiddler and lead singer par excellence for the fine Blue Highway band has his first solo album here, and it is superb. Lane’s music is contemporary in style, but that doesn’t prevent him from including a couple of hardcore traditional classics, powerfully done: Darling Nellie Across The Sea and Love Me Darling Just Tonight, with driving banjo by Tom Adams. There is also the fine Sawmill Man with Lane adding his tenor to a lead vocal by guest Larry Sparks. There are two lovely duets with Shawn’s wife Gracia taking the lead. Others helping out here include Tim Stafford on guitar, Barry Bales on bass and both Rob Ickes and Jerry Douglas providing knockout dobro breaks. A Ronnie Bowman lead vocal highlights Carl Jackson’s Jesse & Me. Lane is responsible for 8 well-written songs including the wonderful I Call Him Son, which Lane sings with just solo guitar accomp. A great album that grows on you with each listening.
